Five Goal First Enough For Gryphins Victory

St. Catharines made their Allan Cup Hockey League debut on Thursday night, facing off the Wentworth Gryphins at the Harry Howell Arena.

The defending Allan Cup Champions got off to a quick start, scoring twice in the first three and a half minutes of the contest thanks to Michael Lomas and Kyle Lewis. Then at the 7:33, Greg Wilson cut into the Gryphins lead, scoring the St. Catharines Saints franchise’s first ever goal.

Wentworth would go on to score three more times in the first period to take a commanding 5-1 lead to the dressing room. Capturing the goals were Matt Hore, MacRae and Lomas netting his second of the game.

In the second, the teams traded a goal each with Wilson giving the visiting side a chance with his second goal of the game, just shy of the eight-minute mark. Dylan Bahr got that goal back for the Gryphins to regain the four-goal cushion with 5:28 left in the middle stanza.

Reid Yochim and Jason Popek closed out the scoring in the third period for Wentworth the seal an 8-2 victory over the Saints.

Lomas (2G, 1A) and Alex Hutchings (3A) each had three points in the game for the Wentworth Gryphins while Wilson (2G) and Brenden Morin (2A) had a pair of points for St. Catharines.

Dawson Carty had a quiet night in the Wentworth net, stopping 14 of 16 shots for the win while at the other end of the ice Trevor Mucucci was peppered with 47 shots, stopping 39 of them.

The Gryphins will look to win on back-to-back nights at the head to Dundas to face the Real McCoys at the J.L. Grightmire Arena on Friday night. Prior to the game, the McCoys will announce their first ever inductee into the franchise’s new Hall of Fame. For the Saints, they will get a day to recover and get ready to face the Cambridge Hornets on Saturday afternoon.
