Gryphins and Tigers Pick Up Road Victories On Friday

On Friday night, four of the five teams were in action with the road teams picking up the wins. The Wentworth Gryphins spoiled the Dundas Real McCoys’ home opener by a score of 7-5 while the Stoney Creek Tigers shut out the Cambridge Hornets with three third period goals.

Prior to the Wentworth-Dundas game at the J.L. Grightmire Arena, the Real McCoys announced their first five inductees to their newly formed Hall of Fame. The inductees included five men who have been with the organization from the very start, Dave Biehler, Bob Pearson, Jamie “Tuna” Lewis, Roger Oakes and Ron Moore.

Don Robertson, the McCoys President, said of this class, “All of these fine men have been with the Real McCoys since day 1 and put in thousands of hours of work helping make the Real McCoys the Real McCoys. The hard work and dedication have been noted. The organization and the community thank them.”

Once the puck dropped, the over 800 fans that gathered for the contest were treated to an entertaining game.

Riley MacRae got the scoring going at the 11:38 mark of the opening period for the Gryphins but Holden Doggett responded for Dundas a couple of minutes later with his first career ACHL goal.

In the second, Wentworth took control of the game rattling off four consecutive goals from MacRae, Ryan Foss, Eric Diodati and Matt MacLeod. The McCoys would get one back before the middle frame ended thanks to Paul Cianfini, but the Gryphins’ Tyler Vankleef scored 15 seconds later to regain the four-goal lead for the visitors.

The third period saw the McCoys make a comeback as Slater Doggett scored a pair of goals and Jess Hackett picked up his third goal of the season. Dundas pushed for the equalizer with the net empty, but Wentworth would find the open net for Alex Hutchings’ third of the year to seal the victory.

Diodati led the way for the Gryphins, scoring once and picking up three assists while Slater Dogget had two goals and an assist for the home side.

Matthew Camilleri earned the win, making 43 stops on the night while allowing five goals. For the McCoys, Mike Mole allowed six goals on 34 shots.

In the other game of the night, it was a battle of who would blink first as the Stoney Creek Tigers visited the Galt Arena Gardens to face the Cambridge Hornets. Neither team would give an inch in the first two periods with the Tigers’ Matt Sagrott and Cambridge’s Mason Kameka standing tall in the caged cabanas at each end of the ice.

It took until the third before a goal went on the board. Cordell James scored the game’s opening goal at 3:41 of the final frame, a goal that would turn out to be the game winner. Bo Webster and Cole Poliziani would add goals of their own to put the game away for Stoney Creek.

Sagrott got the shutout victory, stopping all 26 shots he faced. On a normal night, making 39 saves on 42 shots would get you the win, but unfortunately for Kameka he took the loss.

The Gryphins (3-1-0-0) will look to extend their winning streak to three games on Thursday, November 13th when they host the Stoney Creek Tigers (3-0-0-0) who are on a three-game winning streak. Dundas (0-3-0-0) will look for their first win of the season on Friday November 14th when they host the Cambridge Hornets (2-3-0-0). However, before Cambridge faces the McCoys, they Hornets will host the St. Catharines Saints (0-1-0-0) for a matinee game at Galt Arena Gardens on Saturday starting at 2:00pm.
