Gryphins Beat Dundas, Clinch Playoff Spot
The Wentworth Gryphons secured their postseason berth in dramatic fashion Thursday night at Harry Howell Arena, defeating the visiting Dundas Real McCoys 4-2 on Riley MacRae's clutch power play goal late in the third period.
Wentworth struck first when Alex Hutchings netted his league-leading 14th goal of the season at 15:26 of the opening frame. The McCoys answered back just before the intermission, as Ralph Taggart evened the score at one with just 66 seconds remaining in the period.
The Gryphons wasted no time regaining the lead in the second, with Ryan Foss finding the back of the net just 59 seconds into the frame for what would stand as the period's lone marker.
The third period delivered high drama as both teams exchanged quality scoring chances. Dundas' Mackenzie Wood knotted the game at two with just 3:31 remaining in regulation, but the McCoys' fortunes quickly shifted when they took a cross-checking penalty moments later. MacRae capitalized on the man advantage, blasting home the game-winner before adding an empty-net insurance marker to seal the victory.
Between the pipes, Wentworth's Matthew Camilleri was outstanding, turning aside 45 shots to earn the win. Dundas netminder Ryan DeMelo was equally impressive in a losing effort, making 40 saves on the night.
The McCoys return to action Friday night at J.L. Grightmire Arena, hosting the Stoney Creek Tigers at 7:30pm. Wentworth's next home game is Thursday, January 29th against the St. Catharines Saints, with puck drop scheduled for 7:30pm at Harry Howell Arena.
