Gryphins Double Up Tigers
Wentworth closed off their regular season home schedule on Thursday night at the Harry Howell Arena with a 6-3 win over the defending Robertson Cup champion Stoney Creek Tigers. For the Gryphins, Cory Conacher notched a pair of goals in the win, while Bo Webster also picked up two goals for Stoney Creek.
It was a quiet first period for both teams, even though the Gryphins peppered 24 shots on net. However, it was Webster that scored the lone goal in the frame at 4:29, giving the Tigers the 1-0 lead.
In the second, it was all Wentworth on the scoresheet, getting a power play marker from Conacher at 6:32 to even the score. Nearly five minutes after tying the game, the Gryphins took the lead on Darroll Powe’s first of the season.
The teams would combine to score six times in the third to keep the fans on the edge of their seats. Conacher scored his second of the game 3:48 into the period to extend the lead but Kyle Essery responded 56 seconds later to get Stoney Creek back within a goal. However, Corey Caruso regained the two-goal lead for the home side, and scoring the eventual game winner. Wentworth would go on to get goals from Marc Anthny Simonetta and Alex Hutchings, while Webster’s second of the game was sandwich between them.
Joseph Murdaca made his third start of the year for the Gryphins and earned his third win, stopping 32 of 35 shots he faced. For Stoney Creek, Tymen Edelkoort took the loss, allowing six goals on 52 shots.
Wentworth is next back in action on Saturday February 15th when they travel to the Gateway Ice Centre in Stoney Creek to face the Tigers for the final time in the regular season. Stoney Creek will be back on home ice this Saturday when they host the Dundas Real McCoys. Both games are scheduled for 6:30pm starts.
