Gryphins on a 3-game winning streak

Two of the three teams that were in a tie for first place were in action on Thursday night with the Wentworth Gryphins hosting the Stoney Creek Tigers at the Harry Howell Arena. It would take a four goal third period for the home team to push past the visiting Tigers.

It took until late in the opening period before either team would get on the board. In this case, it was Stoney Creek’s Andrew Whalen giving his team a 1-0 lead on his second of the year. The Tigers extended their lead in the middle stanza on goals from Josh Pietrantonio and Mike Ruberto in a span of 2:59.

The Gryphins would respond before the midway point of the second period with Chandler Romeo finding the back of the net at 9:54. Alex Hutchings then picked up his fourth of the season and league leading tenth point of the campaign to bring Wentworth within a goal.

Mark Corbett would level the score at three at the 8:14 mark of the third period. However, Pietrantonio got the lead back for Stoney Creek just over three minutes later. From there, it was all Gryphins who got goals from Matt Hore, Matt MacLeod and Remy Giftopoulos over the final 5:35 to beat the Tigers 6-4.

Joe Murdaca picked up his second win of the season, making 42 saves on the night for Wentworth while the Tigers’ Matt Sagrott took the loss, stopping 31 of 36 shots he faced.

The Gryphins (4-1-0-0) are now off until Thursday, November 20th when they host the Cambridge Hornets (3-3-0-0) starting at 7:30pm. For Stoney Creek (3-1-0-0), they will be back on the ice this Saturday night at home against the same Hornets with the puck drop scheduled for 6:30pm.
