Gryphins Swarm Hornets
With a lot of success early in the season for both squads, Thursday night’s contest between the Cambridge Hornets and Wentworth Gryphins looked to be a big contest at the Harry Howell Arena. The Hornets looked to make it a three-way tie atop the standings and the Gryphins looked to take sole possession of first place in the league, but it was latter that would happen as Alex Hutchings led Wentworth with two goals and four assists in a 9-3 win.
It would be Cambridge getting on the board first 6:21 into the game on Dan Brewer’s first of the season. That lead would only last 45 seconds as Ryan Foss notched his third of the season for the Gryphins evening the score at one.
In the second period, Wentworth would explode for five goals to the Hornets one to take a commanding lead in the contest. Brett Flemming and Tyler Vankleef scored for the Gryphins in the first 1:37. Kyle Heffernan responded for Cambridge at 3:27 of the middle stanza, scoring his league leading seventh goal of the season. Hutchings then scored back-to-back goals, including the game winner for Wentworth.
Michael Lomas would also score back-to-back goals for the home side, closing out the scoring in the second period at 11:54 and opening the scoring in the final period at 4:42.
With the game effectively put away, Cam Watson would score his third of the year for Cambridge while Matt MacLeod and So Ito added goals for the Gryphins in the final 2:09 of the game, giving Wentworth their fourth consecutive win.
Dawson Carty picks up the win for Wentworth, stopping 25 of 28 shots he faced. At the other end of the ice, Mason Kameka took the loss, making 40 saves on the night.
With the win, the Gryphins moved into first with a 5-1-0-0 record while Cambridge sits in third spot with a 3-6-0 record.
Both teams are back in action on Saturday and will both be on the road. Wentworth will make their first visit of the season the Stoney Creek to face the Tigers starting at 6:30pm. For the Hornets, they will head to St. Catharines to face the Saints with puck drop scheduled for 7:30pm
