Hard-Fought Game Tilts Tigers’ Way in 5–2 Win Over Saints

A night after losing in a shootout, the Stoney Creek Tigers returned home to host the St. Catharines Saints. The last time the two teams met at the Stoney Creek Arena, it was a very physical and gritty game, but on Saturday night, the game was closely contested, ever more than the 5-3 score suggested with the Tigers coming out on top.

Both squads put some pressure on in the first period to get the all important first goal, but neither would put on into the net. It wouldn’t be until 14 seconds into the second period that the puck would cross the goal line with David Pacan scoring for the Saints. Stoney Creek responded just over a minute later when Dylan Madge netted his sixth of the season.

The game remained knotted at one for the next ten minutes, but the Tigers took the lead on Josh Ranalli’s fourth of the season and then extended their lead to two on Rhett Kingston’s first career ACHL goal which turned out to be the game winner.

Matthew Riva would pull the Saints back within a goal of Stoney Creek eight minutes into the third period, but Ranalli potted his second of the game 48 seconds later. The Tigers would add one more goal later in the game into the empty net on Mike Ruberto’s sixth of the campaign.

Daniel Svedin earned the win for Stoney Creek, making 47 saves on the night while allowing two goals. At the other end of the ice, Carver Monroe took the loss, allowing 4 goals on 37 shots.

With the victory, the Tigers move into first place with a three-point lead over the Wentworth Gryphins who they will face next on Thursday January 15th at the Harry Howell Arena starting at 7:30pm. St. Catharines remains on the road for their next game, facing the Cambridge Hornets on Friday night at the Galt Arena Gardens. Puck drop is scheduled for 8:00pm.
