Hornets Hold On To Beat Saints

It was a rare Saturday afternoon matinee with the two newest ACHL teams, St. Catharines Saints and Cambridge Hornets, doing battle at the Galt Arena Gardens. The tightly contested game saw all the scoring happen in the first half of competition with the Hornets picking up their third win of the season.

The scoring came in a batch in the opening period with Kyle Heffernan finding the back of the net first, scoring his four of the year, giving Cambridge the lead at 12:07. The lead only lasted 89 seconds though, thanks to the Saints’ David Pacan’s unassisted goal. The Hornets would regain the lead a couple minutes later Nate Ferris’ marker.

Before the period could end, the Saints got the equalizer from Justin Brack with just four seconds left on the clock, and sending the teams to the intermission even at two goals a piece.

The scoring was rounded out in the second period with Cam Watson notching his second of the year at 2:57 of the frame for the eventual game winner for the Hornets.

The teams battled the rest of the way but both Matthew Lopniski, of St. Catharines, and Marc Williams, for Cambridge, stood tall in the crease and shutting the door. Williams would get the win, stopping 30 of 32 shots he faced while Lopniski would make one more stop than his counterpart but allow one more goal.

Cambridge (3-3-0-0) next takes to the ice on Friday November 14th when they travel to Dundas to take on the Real McCoys (0-3-0-0) at the J.L. Grightmire Arena starting at 7:30pm.
