Hornets Sting Stoney Creek with 8-5 Win

Brett Wilson and Dan Brewer each scored twice and added an assist Friday night as the Cambridge Hornets defeated the first-place Stoney Creek Tigers 8-5 at home. With the win, the Hornets now sit one point back of the Dundas Real McCoys for third place in the ACHL standings and six points ahead of the St. Catharines Saints in the race to clinch one of the final two postseason spots.

Mac Clutsam got the home side on the board first at the 11:01 mark of the opening period with his first of the year. From there, the teams combined for four goals in a span of 2:09. Dylan Madge and Cole Poliziani tallied for the Tigers at 15:36 and 16:13 respectively. Cambridge regained the lead on goals by Brewer at 16:35 and Greg Bullock on the power play with 2:15 left in the first.

Both teams struck early in the second period. Brewer notched his second of the contest and sixth of the year just 1:06 into the frame, while Stoney Creek's Chris Knighton answered 1:45 later, making it 4-3 in favour of Cambridge.

The Tigers leveled the score just 43 seconds into the third period on Cordell James' 11th of the season. It remained tied until the 5:11 mark when Cam Watson—playing in his 198th career ACHL game, which ties him for second all-time—scored to put the Hornets ahead. Just 47 seconds later, Wilson struck for what would be the eventual winner. Madge added the Tigers' fifth goal, but Wilson provided insurance before Taylor Doherty iced the game with an empty-netter.

Ryan Gibb faced a barrage of 61 shots in the Cambridge net but picked up the win with 56 saves. Matt Sagrott took the loss in the Tigers' cage, stopping 23 of 30 shots.

Both teams are off until Monday when they'll both play at home for Family Day. The Hornets host the Dundas Real McCoys at Galt Arena Gardens at 6:30 p.m., while the Stoney Creek Tigers host the St. Catharines Saints at West Lincoln Community Centre in Smithville at 2:30 p.m. for the West Lincoln Showcase.
