Hornets Sting Wentworth For First ACH Win

A night after playing their first game in the Allan Cup Hockey League, the Cambridge Hornets took to the ice at Galt Arena Gardens, hosting the Wentworth Gryphins who picked up the victory in the teams’ first meeting.

Like the previous night, it would be the visiting team to get on the board first with Jason Popek scoring his first of the year at 9:06 of the opening period, giving the Gryphins a 1-0 lead. Then two and a half minutes later, Yianni Skropolis evened the score at one with a power play marker for Cambridge. Chad Herron would then give the home side the lead at 13:01 of the first period.

It remained 2-1 in favour of the Hornets until the third period when Nate Ferris and Cam Watson each scored with the man advantage to make it a three-goal lead.

Mason Kameka shut the door on Wentworth, making 35 saves on the night to pick up the victory. At the other end of the ice, Matthew Camilleri took the loss, allowing four goals on 37 shots, facing 17 shots in the final frame alone.

Skropolis led the way for Cambridge scoring a goal and assisting on another while teammate Jason Pitton had a pair of assists.

The Hornets will be back in action on October 31st where they will look to put a scare into their old rivals, the Dundas Real McCoys. Puck drop on Halloween night at the Galt Arena Gardens is 8:00pm. For Wentworth, they will have a bit of time to get back into the win column as they won’t play again until Thursday November 6th when they host the St. Catharines Saints who will be playing their first game of the season.
