Hutchings Reaches 100 Points in Gryphins' 8-5 Victory

Wentworth received contributions from seven different scorers in their 8-5 victory over the Cambridge Hornets on Thursday night at Harry Howell Arena. While Ryan Foss was the lone Gryphon to light the lamp twice, including the game-winner, the evening belonged to Alex Hutchings, who reached a significant milestone by becoming the 35th player since 2011 to record 100 points in the Allan Cup Hockey League. Hutchings finished the night with four points (1G, 3A), while Cambridge's Kolton Maguire posted three points (2G, 1A) in a losing effort.

Tyler Vankleef opened the scoring just 1:51 into the contest, but Brett Wilson answered for the Hornets with his eighth of the season at the 9:19 mark to tie the game. The Gryphins needed only 16 seconds to respond, as Foss restored their lead with Hutchings picking up the secondary assist—his historic 100th point in the league.

Moments after reaching the milestone, Hutchings added the exclamation point by scoring to make it 3-1. Cambridge refused to go quietly, however, as Maguire and Nathan Herrington tallied to knot the score at 3-3 heading into the first intermission.

Maguire struck again 6:01 into the middle frame, giving the Hornets their only lead of the evening at 4-3. The advantage was short-lived, as Wentworth rattled off three unanswered goals from Remy Giftopoulos, Matt MacLeod, and Foss to take a commanding 6-4 lead into the second intermission.

Steve MacAulay pulled Cambridge within one with his seventh goal of the campaign in the third period, but Brett Flemming and Michael Lomas added insurance markers—the latter on the power play—to seal the victory for the Gryphins.

Between the pipes, Dawson Carty improved to 4-0-0 on the season with a 38-save performance, while Mason Kameka made 41 stops on 49 shots in the loss for Cambridge.

Wentworth returns to action Saturday evening when they travel to Stoney Creek for a first-place showdown with the Tigers at 6:30 p.m. Cambridge must regroup quickly, as they host the St. Catharines Saints on Friday night at 8:00 p.m.
