Three goals in the final 65 seconds of regulation by the Dundas Real McCoys helped them force overtime on the road against the Wentworth Gryphins on Thursday night. However, Alex Hutchings’ tenth goal of the season gave the Gryphins their seventh victory of the campaign by a score of 8-7. In the win, Tyler Vankleef and Matt MacLeod each had two goals and an assist.
Wentworth took a stranglehold of the game, scoring the first five goals on the night. A pair came in the opening period with Tyler Rollo and Vankleef finding the back of the net. Then in the second MacLeod, Riley MacRae and Vankleef scored to go up 5-0.
From there, the Real McCoys woke up. Nathan Longpre and Ralph Taggart scored at 17:23 and 18:15 respectively to get Dundas back within three before the teams headed to the second intermission.
In the third period, Brett Flemming got one back to make it 6-2 for the home side just 73 seconds into the frame. However, the McCoys didn’t hold back, getting goals from Nolan Sheeran and Brad Bonello to get within two of the Gryphins. MacLeod then gave Wentworth another three-goal lead, scoring on the power play with 5:46 left in the period.
It looked like Wentworth would go on to win this game, but Bonello sparked a late comeback with a goal at 18:55 of the period. Then Longpre scored his second of the game at 19:17 and Mackenzie Wood scored the equalizer 23 seconds later to send it to overtime.
In overtime, the Gryphins would outshoot Dundas 4-1 with the final shot coming from Hutchings’ stick at 2:21 to send the home fans home happy.
Matt Camilleri earned the victory for Wentworth, making 25 saves and upping his record to 3-2 on the season. Dan Davies took the loss for the Real McCoys in his first game of the season. Davies would stop 31 of 39 pucks he faced.
Wentworth will close out the home portion of their regular season schedule on Thursday February 6th when they host the Stoney Creek Tigers at the Harry Howell Arena starting at 7:30pm. The Real McCoys will return to the ice on the road on Saturday February 8th at the Gateway Ice Centre against the Tigers. Game time is scheduled for 6:30pm.
