McCoys End Stoney Creek’s Reign

Dundas doubled up the Stoney Creek Tigers 6-3 on Friday night, taking Game 2 of the Robertson Cup semi-final series at the J.L. Grightmire Arena to eliminate the defending champion Stoney Creek Tigers. Slater Doggett scored all three first period goals for the McCoys and combined for 14 points along with linemates Spencer Abbott and Shane Conacher.

The first of the three goals by Doggett came at 1:19 of the opening period when he found the top shelf after taking a pass from Abbott through the slot. Stoney Creek would tie the game at one just before the five-minute mark when Jordan Gignac collected a loose puck following a save and tucked it into the open net.

Doggett would go on to score on a snapshot at 9:30 and then completed the natural hat trick at 18:15 of the first period when Abbott split the Tigers’ defense and found Doggett with a cross-ice pass. The hat trick could have been finished about six and a half minutes earlier in the period, but Doggett rang the puck off the post.

For the early part of the second period, Dundas controlled the game, however it was the Tigers who would outscore the opposition 2-1 in the frame. Bo Webster got Stoney Creek within a goal 4:49 into the period, on the power play, when his bad angle shot bounced around in Ryan Demelo’s pads and crept past the goal line to cut the McCoys lead to 3-2.

A few minutes later, Tyman Edelkoort made a couple of big saves for the Tigers from point blank range. However, Dundas got their own power play goal on a tic-tac-toe play which Simon Mangos ended, finding the five-hole and regaining the two-goal lead. Stoney Creek would regain that goal before the end of the period with Kyle Essery tipping in a high shot.

Paul Geiger nearly tied the game at four but could not poke a loose puck in prior to Demelo finding the handle on the puck.

Stoney Creek pressured the McCoys in the third period getting a pair of great chances to even the score. Webster had the first good chance seven minutes into the period, but he could not collect the loose puck before Demelo smothered it. Dundas would extend their lead at 8:41 when Justin Dasilva chipped the puck over Edelkoort to give the home side an insurance marker.

The Tigers appeared to have got back within a goal with just under five minutes to play in regulation, but Demelo had the pads right across the goal line, keeping it out by millimetres. From there, Shane Conacher would ice the game with an empty net goal with 2:54 remaining in the contest.

Conacher would end the game with a goal and five assists for Dundas, while his teammate Spencer Abbott collected five helpers.

In the nets, Demelo picked up the win, making 34 saves while the Tigers’ Edelkoort took the loss, stopping 21 of 27 shots he faced.

Dundas now advances to the finals against the Wentworth Gryphins in the best of three series for the league title. Stay tuned to the ACHL website and social media for scheduling details.
