McCoys Pick Up First Win of Season

McCoys shot goes wide of Cambridge net

For the second time this season, but the first at the J.L. Grightmire Arena, the Dundas Real McCoys and Cambridge Hornets renewed their rivalry. In their first meeting, back on Halloween night, it was the Hornets that earned a 7-6 win on home ice. Fans were hoping for another high scoring affair, but they got a tight checking game which the McCoys came away with the victory by a score of 3-1.

Yianni Skropolis got the game’s opening goal for Cambridge with 5:57 remaining in the first period. Dundas would even the score at one on a late power play goal from Igor Gongalsky with Former McCoy Cam Watson in the box.

Both teams had opportunities in the second but the netminders were standing tall in the crease. It would take until the third period before another puck crossed the goal line. Trevor Atkinson would get the game winner for Dundas at the 2:11 mark of the period before Nathan Longpre scored the insurance marker with 37 second left in the game.

Ryan DeMelo made 14 saves on the night, allowing just one goal on route to the victory for the McCoys, while the Hornets’ Marc Williams took the loss, allowing two goals on 25 shots.

Dundas will head out on the road for their next game on Saturday evening when they visit the St. Catharine’s Saints who are hosting their home opener starting at 7:30pm.  Cambridge will remain on the road, playing the Stoney Creek Tigers, also on Saturday, at the Stoney Creek Arena starting at 6:30pm.
