Saints Strike Three Times on Special Teams in Win Over Cambridge
Cambridge raised a banner honoring their 1982-83 Allan Cup Championship team at Galt Arena Gardens on Friday night, but the celebration was short-lived as the St. Catharines Saints spoiled the ceremony with a 6-3 victory over the Hornets. Justin Brack dominated for St. Catharines with five points (1G, 4A), while Steve MacAulay recorded a goal and an assist for Cambridge.
The opening period saw four goals, with St. Catharines bookending the scoring. David Pacan opened the scoring at 6:53 with his 11th goal of the season. Cambridge responded with goals from MacAulay (11:34) and Nathan Herrington (15:53) to take a 2-1 lead, but Troy McLean's fourth of the year tied it at two less than a minute later.
Special teams defined the second period. Brett Wilson's power-play goal 1:40 into the frame restored Cambridge's lead, but Cial Cirillo answered with a shorthanded marker just over five minutes in to make it 3-3. St. Catharines then capitalized on two power-play opportunities, with Pacan notching his second goal and Brack scoring with 3:36 remaining in the period to give the Saints a 5-3 advantage.
Ryan Donovan sealed the victory with an empty-net goal with 93 seconds left in regulation.
Trevor Micucci earned the win with 38 saves for St. Catharines, while Mason Kameka made 25 stops in the loss for Cambridge.
The teams will meet again Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. at Merritton Centennial Arena in St. Catharines.
