Saints Surprise Tigers In OT

On Saturday night, the league leading Stoney Creek Tigers made their first visit to St. Catharines to face the Saints at the Merritton Centennial Arena. The Saints would score three times in the third period to send the game to overtime where they picked up their second win in as many games.

Bo Webster got the scoring underway 99 seconds into the contest for the Tigers. That goal held up until just before the four-minute mark of the second when Cody Freeman tied it for the Saints. Stoney Creek would then regain the lead when Dylan Madge scored his fourth and fifth goals of the season at 7:09 and 15:00 of the middle frame.

St. Catharines would get one goal back with 1:10 let in the second period on Troy McLean’s first of the year, but Webster’s second of the game and fifth of the season gave Stoney Creek the 4-2 lead heading to the second intermission.

The third period saw the Saints start the scoring with David Pacan finding the back of the net with the man advantage 1:42 into frame. Andrew Whalen responded for the Tigers just over seven and half minutes later. Pacan then scored his second of the game, also on the power play, with 6:42 bringing St. Catharines back within a goal once again and Cial Cirillo tied the game, and eventually sent the game to an extra period, with his second of the year with 2:39 left in the period.

The overtime period didn’t last too long as Pacan completed the hat trick 35 seconds into the extra frame, giving St. Catharines a 6-5 win.

With the win, the Saints are now 2-4-0-0 on the season, just four points back in the standings of the Cambridge Hornets for fourth place while Stoney Creek (5-1-1-0) holds a one-point lead over the Wentworth Gryphins (5-2-0-0).

Trevor Micucci picked up the win in overtime, making 48 saves on the night for St. Catharines. For the Tigers, Daniel Svedin took the loss, allowing six goals on 46 shots.

Both teams return to action at home on Saturday, December 6th: Stoney Creek faces the Cambridge Hornets at 6:30pm at Stoney Creek Arena, and the Saints host the Wentworth Gryphins at the Merritton Centennial Arena starting at 7:30pm.
