Stoney Creek Survives Gryphins’ Late Push to Win 9–6

Tigers celebrate a victory

On Saturday night, the Stoney Creek Tigers hosted the Wentworth Gryphins at the Stoney Creek Arena on Hockey Fights Cancer Night. The Tigers would jump out to a huge lead in the first tow periods before weathering a storm of goals from Wentworth to hold on for a 9-6 win.

It took until just over five minutes into the game that the scoring started with Cordell James getting his third of the season for Stoney Creek. The Gryphins would respond just over five minutes later Kyle Lewis’ first of the game and second of the year. From there it was all Tigers, scoring three more times in a span of 2:23 to go up 4-1 on goals by Jordan Gignac, Dylan Madge and Josh Pietrantonio.

The second period continued to see Stoney Creek scoring almost at will. The home team would see five goals added to their side of the scoreboard thanks to Daniel Vella, Pietrantonio, Mitchell Reid, Kyle Essery and Matt Ruberto. Brett Flemming stopped the bleeding for the Gryphins before the middle frame came to an end, scoring with 48 seconds remaining and changed the momentum.

Wentworth came out in the third period with a renewed push as they looked to rally. They went on to score four times in the final period, getting the first of the four goals 1:19 into the period on the power play from Eric Diodati. Tyler Vankleef and Corey Caruso then scored for the Gryphins at 4:24 and 7:05 of the stanza, putting the Tigers back on their paws.

The Gryphins continued to control the period, but they were only able to get one more on Lewis’ second of the game with 86 seconds left on the clock.Tigers on the bench wearing special HFC jerseys

Matt Sagrott picked up the win for Stoney Creek, stopping 37 shots while allowing six goals. Joe Murdaca started the game but was lifted after allowing eight goals and making 16 saves. Matthew Camilleri finished off the game, stopping seven of eight shots he would see.
