Cambridge visited the Real McCoys at the J.L. Grightmire Arena on Friday night and skated away with a convincing 5-2 victory, fueled by three unanswered goals over the final two periods. The win vaulted the Hornets into a tie for fourth place with the St. Catharines Saints, now sitting just two points behind Dundas in the standings.
The Hornets wasted no time establishing their presence, jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the first half of the opening period on goals from Steve MacAulay and Nathan Herrington. The McCoys, however, showed their resilience in the final four and a half minutes of the frame, as Nolan Sheeran and Brad Bonello found the back of the net to knot the game at 2-2 heading into the first intermission.
From there, Cambridge took complete control. MacAulay notched his second of the night on the power play at the 10:20 mark of the second period, a goal that would stand as the game-winner. Just over a minute and a half later, Noah Monteiro tallied his first of the season to give the visitors a commanding two-goal cushion.
Clayton Peterek capped off the scoring in the third period with his first goal of the season, an unassisted marker at 9:22 that made it 5-2 for the Hornets.
In goal, Marc Williams earned the victory for Cambridge, turning aside 41 shots. At the other end, Ryan DeMelo made 42 saves in a losing effort for Dundas.
The McCoys will look to snap a five-game losing streak when they travel to Stoney Creek Arena on Saturday evening to battle the Tigers at 6:30 p.m.
Cambridge returns to action Thursday night with a road game against the Wentworth Gryphins at Harry Howell Arena (7:30 p.m.), before hosting the St. Catharines Saints on Friday in a crucial matchup with significant playoff implications.
MILESTONE NOTE
Dundas Real McCoys captain Simon Mangos became the franchise leader in games played by a defenseman, skating in his 178th career game, surpassing Tom Brown (2004-12).
