Tigers Roar Past Wentworth

It was a battle at the top of the Allan Cup Hockey standings on Thursday night as the first place Wentworth Gryphins played host to the second place Stoney Creek Tigers at the Harry Howell Arena. Stoney Creek would score five straight goals to pick up a 5-2 victory over the Gryphins to jump into first place.

Alex Hutchings got Wentworth on the board just past the halfway point of the first period with his league leading 11th goal and 23rd point of the season. That lead didn’t last long as Kyle Essery evened the score 2:12 after the Gryphins goal to tie the game at one.

The second period saw Stoney Creek explode for four goals. The first came 69 seconds into the frame on Mike Ruberto’s fourth of the year. Andrew Whalen then netted his fifth of the year, giving the Tigers a 3-1 lead with what would be the eventual game winner. Mitchell Reid and Essery closed out the Stoney Creek scoring in the middle period with the Tigers holding a 5-1 lead.

The Gryphins would get one goal back in the third on Tyler Hore’s first of the year, but they would not be able to get any closer on the scoreboard.

Matt Sagrott earned his fifth win of the year for Stoney Creek, making 35 saves on the night. Joe Murdaca took the loss, allowing five goals on 39 shots.

The Tigers are now off until Friday, December 19th when they travel to Cambridge to face the Hornets. For Wentworth, they get right back on the ice this Friday night when they face the Hornets in Cambridge. Both games start at 8:00pm.
