Tigers Stymie Hornets For 5-1 Win

Tigers celebrating a goal by their bench

Mike and Matt Ruberto powered the defending regular season champion Stoney Creek Tigers to a 5-1 win over the Cambridge Hornets on Saturday night at Stoney Creek Arena.

The Tigers struck first, with Mike Ruberto opening the scoring 3:25 into the opening period. It stayed 1-0 for the home side until 12:37 of the second, when Bo Webster doubled the lead. Matt Ruberto then added his first of the season before the period ended to make it 3-0.

In the third, Tye McSorley padded the lead at 7:13. A couple of minutes later, Cambridge was awarded a penalty shot when Brady Schwindt was taken down on a breakaway, but he was unable to convert. The Hornets finally ended Daniel Svedin’s shutout bid with just under six minutes left on a goal from Connor Hall. Mike Ruberto sealed the win with an empty-netter with 97 seconds remaining.

Svedin made 20 saves for the victory, the 70th of his ACHL career. He also moved into second place on the league’s all-time minutes played list with 6,415, passing Brett Leggat. Mason Kameka took the loss, allowing four goals on 30 shots.

Stoney Creek (1-0-0-0) will next be in action on Thursday, October 29th, when they travel to Harry Howell Arena to face the Wentworth Gryphins (1-0-0-0) in a rematch of last year’s playoff finals. Game time is 7:30 pm. The Hornets (1-1-0-0) return to home ice at Galt Arena Gardens on Friday, November 6th, to host the St. Catharines Saints (1-1-0-0) at 7:45 pm.
