Vankleef’s Hat Trick Leads Gryphins To Victory
In the second game of a home and home series, the visiting Wentworth Gryphins would ride a three goal first period to a victory over the Stoney Creek Tigers. With the win, both teams now sit at 1-1-0-0 early in the season.
The opening period of play saw the Gryphins jump out to a three-goal lead on tallies from Marc-Anthony Simonetta, Jason Popek and Mark Corbett with the last of the three coming on the power play. However, Stoney Creek would get back into the game in the final couple minutes of the period, collecting shorthanded goals from Jordan Gignac and Joel Knight to make it a one goal contest.
Stoney Creek was able to tie the game just over four minutes into the middle stanza on Dan Poliziani’s first goal of the season. Tyler Vankleef would regain the lead for Wentworth just prior to the halfway point of the period. Dominik Crnogorac brought the Tigers back to even on home ice with a little more than five minutes to go before Vankleef scored his second of the game. The latter goal coming on the power play with just four seconds left on the clock.
In the third, Wentworth made sure that they would take the victory with Simonetta scoring on the power play and Vankleef picked up the hat trick with an empty net goal.
Matt Camilleri picked up the win for the Gryphins, stopping 42 of 46 shots. For Stoney Creek, Daniel Svedin took the loss, allowing five goals over 40 minutes of play.
