Wentworth Doubles Up Hornets
A four goal first period would be all the Wentworth Gryphins would need on the road Friday night as they handed the Cambridge Hornets their eighth straight loss. Eijah Roberts scored a pair of goals for Wentworth while Jason Popek and Dylan Bahr each had a goal and an assist in the victory.
The home side would get on the board first as Steve Macaulay picked up his first goal of the year at the 2:32 mark. However, from there the Gryphins took over, scoring four times over a 10:17 span. Bahr evened the score at one four and a half minutes after the game’s opening goal. Then David Miller and Riley MacRae found the back of the net at 11:47 and 12:53 respectively. Popek would close out the scoring with a power play marker which was the eventual game winner with 2:41 left on the clock.
Dan Brewer would get Cambridge a goal closer to Wentworth with the lone goal of the second period. Then in the third Roberts would open and close the scoring in the final frame with his first two goals of the season. Brewer would add the other goal of the period for the Hornets.
With the win, the Gryphins leapfrog the Stoney Creek Tigers, once again, into the top spot of the standings with an 8-3-0-0 record. Cambridge remains in fourth place, six points back of the Dundas Real McCoys, and one point up on the last place St. Catharines Saints.
Matthew Camilleri earned his third win of the season, which places him in a three-way tie for goaltender victories this season. Camilleri would stop 26 of 29 shots he faced on the night. For the Hornets, Marc Williams got the start in net but came out of the game after the fourth Gryphins goal. He would take the loss, facing 16 shots. Mason Kameka finished off the game, allowing just one goal on 16 shots.
Wentworth will close out their 2025 portion of the schedule on Thursday December 18th when they host the St. Catharines Saints at the Harry Howell Arena starting at 7:30pm. For the Hornets, their final game before the holiday break comes on Friday December 19th. On that night they will host the Stoney Creek Tigers at the Galt Arena Gardens starting at 8:00pm.
