Wood's Hat Trick Powers McCoys Past Saints

The St. Catharines Saints and Dundas Real McCoys met Saturday night in the Garden City in a game with significant playoff implications for both teams and the idle Cambridge Hornets. Mackenzie Wood notched his third hat trick of the season, propelling the McCoys back into third place with a 7-5 victory.

The home side opened the scoring when Niki Petti tallied his second goal of the year at 3:54 of the first period. Dundas responded immediately, with newcomer Doug Clarkson tying the game just 36 seconds later. Nolan Sheeran then collected his sixth goal of the season at 9:57 to give the McCoys a 2-1 lead after one period.

Dundas continued their offensive surge in the second period. Wood scored twice in the opening eight minutes, extending the lead to 4-1 at 7:39. Cam Fergus added his fourth goal of the season shorthanded at 13:30, making it 5-1. St. Catharines battled back with two late goals—Matthew Riva at 17:52 and Petti with 36 seconds remaining in the frame—cutting the deficit to 5-3 heading into the third period.

The final frame saw both teams trade goals. Aaron Smith scored what proved to be the game winner for Dundas just past the halfway mark of the period. Minutes later, Riva converted on the power play to bring the Saints within two. Wood then completed his hat trick and seized the league lead in goals with his 18th of the season. Cam Stewart scored his first goal of the campaign for St. Catharines with 3:06 remaining to round out the scoring.

Ryan DeMelo earned the win with 36 saves on 41 shots for his third victory of the year. Carver Monroe took the loss for the Saints, allowing seven goals on 35 shots.

Dundas returns home Friday, February 13th to face the Wentworth Gryphins at J.L. Grightmire Arena. The Saints next play Saturday, February 14th, hosting the Gryphins. Both games start at 7:30 p.m.
